University Police and Public Safety Background
The supervisors and all officers in the University Police and Public Safety Office at Penn state Berks are graduates of a certified police academy approved by the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission. All members of the department are commissioned under state law and have the same authority as municipal police officers in the Commonwealth; have complete annual training requirements established by the Commission, which addresses changes and revisions to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code and the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code; and maintain current certification in both first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Periodic in-service training is also provided in subjects directed toward the specific needs of the campus.
A cooperative relationship is maintained by the Penn State Berks Police Department with all surrounding police departments, including:
- Spring Township
- Wyomissing Borough
- City of Reading
- Pennsylvania State Police
- Various other state and federal agencies
Some of the benefits of these relationships are interaction in various training programs, the use of joint radio systems, coordination of coverage for special events, and most importantly, a mutual effort when investigating serious incidents.
